On May 26, 2021, the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy announced the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2021 – Global Ranking in Academic Subjects results(GRAS).
In total, almost 4000 universities across 93 countries are ranked, with the best 1800 being published. Similarly, this year’s league table includes 19 Russian universities with six of them ranking in the top 100.
Since 2009, Shanghai Ranking start publishing world university rankings based on academic subjects. In the GRAS 2021, Universities ranked in 54 subjects encompassing Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences. Similarly, Russian universities ranked 29th, engineering, and technical sciences included 26 times, and natural sciences (mentioned 17 times). Aside from their typical high rankings in physics, mathematics, information technology, metallurgy, and other engineering fields, Russian universities also well-regarded in socio-economic and humanitarian sciences, nanotechnology, agriculture, biology, and medicine.
In addition, Lomonosov Moscow State University (Physics), National Research Technological University (MISiS), St. Petersburg State University (Automation and Control), HSE University (Mathematics), Belgorod State University (Mathematics), NRU BelGU” (Metallurgy), ITMO University (Mathematics), and ITMO University (Mathematics, Automation, and Control) are among the top-100 universities.
In the Russian ranking group, HSE University and ITMO University are at the top. On eight categories, both universities performed well. HSE University also became the first Russian university to provide degrees in “Public Administration” and “Education” at the same time. Moscow State University ranked first in Russia in 12 subject areas, making it the finest university in the country.
For the first time, Sechenov University entered the worldwide list, quickly establishing itself among the world’s educational institutions in the field of “Clinical Medicine.”
NSU, TSU, TPU, RUDN, MIPT, MEPhI, SPbPU, Kazan Federal University, Lobachevsky University, and other Russian educational institutions also listed in ARWU – Global Ranking of Academic Subjects.
